Protecting the Unborn Matters More Than Propping Up Obamacare

Congress is once again scrambling to prop up the failing Obamacare system by extending its subsidies before they expire. At the center of this debate is a familiar fight: whether those billions in federal dollars will be shielded from funding abortion, or whether they will become yet another revenue stream for the abortion industry.

At the heart of the debate is whether these federal subsidies will be tied to ironclad pro life protections, specifically the Hyde Amendment, which bars taxpayer funding of elective abortion. While abortion advocates insist that current Obamacare mechanisms are enough, pro life leaders know better. These so called “protections” are nothing more than accounting gimmicks that allow money to move around until it finds its way into the abortion industry’s pocket.

This is why nearly 90 pro life organizations and a large block of pro life lawmakers are standing firm. They know that if Congress extends Obamacare subsidies without Hyde protections, it will open the door to taxpayer dollars directly underwriting abortion coverage. For those of us committed to protecting innocent life, that is unacceptable.

Abortion advocates are already crying foul, warning that including pro life protections could blow up negotiations. But that is exactly the point: If the cost of extending subsidies is forcing taxpayers to fund abortion, then Congress must choose life. Protecting the unborn is not a bargaining chip. It is a moral necessity.

Here in Missouri, we know the stakes. We are already on the front lines with Amendment 3, the pro life constitutional amendment heading to the ballot in 2026. Just as we are working to safeguard our state constitution from the abortion industry, pro life leaders in Washington must ensure that federal programs do not become a backdoor funding source for abortion providers.

Why This Matters for Missouri

  • Taxpayer money should never fund abortion not in Washington, and not in Jefferson City

  • Hyde protections save lives. Every time they are enforced, fewer abortions are financed with federal dollars

  • Our fight in Missouri is tied to the national fight. The same abortion lobby pushing for Obamacare subsidies without restrictions is working to defeat Amendment 3

The Path Forward

We cannot compromise on this issue. Pro life lawmakers must stand strong and demand that any Obamacare subsidy extension include clear Hyde protections. Anything less would betray the unborn and the taxpayers who are forced to fund a practice they morally oppose.

And here in Missouri, we must stay just as focused. Passing Amendment 3 in 2026 is the next critical step in ensuring that our state constitution defends life rather than empowering the abortion industry.
