51 Senators Stand for Life — Two Choose Silence

When it comes to defending life, silence speaks volumes.

Last week, 51 Republican senators signed a strong letter demanding that HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and FDA Commissioner Marty Makary halt the distribution of the abortion pill until a complete safety review is finished. The message was clear: the FDA cannot continue to expand the use of a drug that ends life while ignoring safety and truth.

But two names were missing. Senators Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska.

The Letter: A Unified Call to Accountability

The senators’ letter, led by Senator Lindsey Graham, was clear and uncompromising. It called on the FDA to

  1. Suspend approval and distribution of all chemical abortion drugs and generics until independent safety studies are verified.

  2. Reinstate in-person prescribing requirements so that these drugs are not sent through the mail or used without medical oversight.

  3. Include every generic version in the current safety review so that no manufacturer can hide behind loopholes.

  4. Explain why a new generic version was approved before the promised safety evaluation was completed.

Senators Josh Hawley and Eric Schmitt of Missouri signed immediately, reaffirming Missouri’s leadership in the fight to defend innocent life. They joined nearly every Republican senator in calling for the FDA to be held accountable for cutting corners and putting both mothers and babies at risk.

The letter reminded the agency that its duty is not to serve an industry that profits from death but to protect the public and uphold the law.

That is not political. It is moral.

The Ones Who Refused to Stand

Then there were two who refused to sign. Senator Susan Collins and Senator Lisa Murkowski stood apart from their colleagues.

Both senators have long claimed to be “moderate” on life issues, but there is nothing moderate about remaining silent while thousands of unborn children die each week. Their refusal to sign this letter was not about procedure. It was about priorities.

While 51 of their colleagues took a stand for the unborn, they stood still.

And silence in the face of moral clarity is not neutrality. It is surrender.

Why This Letter Matters

This letter was not symbolic. It created a public record that demands accountability from federal agencies and sets the stage for future legal and legislative action. It also sends a message to the country that a majority of the Republican Party is still willing to defend life without apology.

The FDA can no longer claim that Congress is unaware of what it is doing. Fifty-one senators, representing tens of millions of Americans, have spoken out against the reckless expansion of abortion drugs.

This kind of unified stand is exactly what the pro-life movement has been praying for. It proves that conviction still exists in Washington when leaders choose principle over politics.

Missouri’s Role: Leading by Example

Missouri’s senators did not hesitate. Hawley and Schmitt signed without reservation, continuing Missouri’s record as one of the strongest pro-life states in America.

Missouri was the first state in the nation to end abortion after the fall of Roe v. Wade. Now, by standing with this Senate letter, Missouri continues to lead the way with courage and conviction.

A Warning to “Pro-Choice” Republicans

Every Republican who dodges this fight should understand what is at stake. The pro-life movement is not asking for political perfection. It is demanding moral clarity. You are either for protecting the unborn or you are not.

When the next election season comes, the names of Collins and Murkowski will not be forgotten. The American people deserve leaders who will not bend to the pressure of the abortion industry, who will not compromise the truth, and who are not ashamed to defend the least of these.

What Happens Next

  • The letter now sits on the desks of the HHS Secretary and the FDA Commissioner, both of whom are required to respond.

  • Senate committees are expected to continue pressing for hearings and oversight.

  • Pro-life states like Missouri can use this momentum to strengthen their own enforcement against illegal chemical abortion trafficking and telehealth loopholes.

MO Protects Statement

At MO Protects, we applaud the 51 senators who refused to bow to political convenience and stood up for truth and life. We especially thank Missouri’s delegation for leading with conviction.

To the two senators who refused to sign, we say this: history will remember where you stood when life was on the line.

This is a moment for courage, not compromise.
